I'm very pleased to announce that there is now a fully supported Mozilla Thunderbird extension available. Some highlights:

1. JavaScript client-server data is encrypted using SHA256, AES128, XXTEA. Credentials are created, exchanged, and modified using SSL.

2. A brand new JavaScript synchronization client and Java synchronization server were written from scratch specifically to sync Thunderbird and Lightning. Because of this, it is extremely fast to synchronize - even with JavaScript doing AES128 and SHA256.

3. Full UTF-8 support for all Thunderbird and Lightning attributes.

4. Since ScheduleWorld wrote the JavaScript client and Java server there are no interoperability problems. It 'just works'. New features can be implemented quickly without waiting for other third parties.

5. Full interoperability with SyncML by using the ScheduleWorld SyncML service as a bridge.

6. Keep as many Thunderbird instances in sync as you like.

7. Free.

SSL Note: Available on or before March 2, 2007.
Lightning / Calendar: Available the first half of March 2007.

You can read more about it on the wiki:

Cheers.

Hi,

This extension works fine (no duplicates for the moment) but I use it only for contacts, not for calendar.

However Thundirbird contacts does not fully support all fields available in Evolution, even not all those I have on my old Nokia 7650. This means that as soon as a contact update comes from Thundirbid, all details entered in Evolution are lost.

I just did the test : create a contact in Evolution with 5 phone numbers (gsm, work ,home ...) , three email adress (home, work, other), then add a birthday.
On first sync with Thundirbird, the contact is created but :

- 'other' email is lost
- only two phones numbers are kept, GSM and work phone

I can live with that, however as soon as I make any changes in Thundirbird contacts, all Evolution contact informations that do not exist in Thundirbird are erased.

It is not this extension fault, as Thunderbird cannot send informations that it cannot save itself. However that said, I think this extension is almost useless if your "synchronization chain" includes a full PIM application as Evolution.

Thierry: I can and do account for the attribute mismatch between a large variety of devices, and I will account for this in the extension as well. I just need a day or two. You ran into this before I could address it.

Cheers.

Afraid to be posting with another problem - I can see by the penultimate post that it might just be my problem though:

SyncSW doesn't seem to do *anything*. Whether I click the toolbar or menu options, the dialogue doesn't launch. I can't even launch the configuration system to try changing my login details!

I want to synchronise:
Palm Tungsten T3, Palm Desktop 4.1.4, Synthesis STD v2.5.0.68
Sony Ericsson K700i (K800i in near future)
Mozilla Thunderbird/Lightning/Sunbird

Thierry: it is done. version 1.13 or greater will preserve the extra attributes on the server.

There are no known bugs or outstanding feature requests with the Thunderbird extension (wrt contacts, Lightning/calendar is on the way..)

Cheers.

I'll have to think about this. From memory, TBird doesn't display this property, but provides a place to store birthday info so this particular property should be fine to sync.

Random thought: a concern of mine is that there are a lot of extra properties that I'd like to sync and make available to folks using TBird, but I don't know the best way to share them with other extensions.

Will look at adding this for the next release.

Cheers.

Any news on the birthday problem? It's not just that birthdays are not synced -- they are killed by syncing, so it's more like a giant data loss bug .

I'll be looking at this shortly after the next major release is in production - in a few days.

Wrt data loss - no data loss occurs on the SW server right? And I don't see how I can be responsible for the data created by a virtually unlimited number of possible extensions.

Cheers.
