1 Introduction
These instructions explain how to install XMLTV (0.5.34 or later) and use it to schedule TV-listings to be downloaded to your machine. It is assumed you already have ScheduleWorld running.A simple screenshot can be found here.
2 Download and Install XMLTV
NEW! Newer versions of XmlTV greater than 0.5.34 do not work on Windows. Only use 0.5.34 for now on Windows. Any version under Linux works perfectly.
Note: United Kingdom TV-listings do not require XMLTV because they are already in XMLTV format. (So UK viewers can skip this step)- Windows: You can download the XMLTV binary for Windows (0.5.34 only) at: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=39046.
-
Linux: The XMLTV home page has lots of download and
install (always get the latest version) info
(including Linux binary RPMs) at:
http://membled.com/work/apps/xmltv/. Of
course, you can download the source and build it from the
same link as the Windows link above. NOTE: the tv_grab_*
programs must be in your path.
Alternatively if you are running Linux and you have apt installed you may be able to type "apt-get install xmltv" and everything will just work.
- OS/X Fink: http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/xmltv. Note the Fink FAQ for installing the 'xmltv' package says you need to type 'fink install xmltv' because xmltv is in 'unstable'.
- NOTE: North American listings are only available with version 0.5.34 and greater of XmlTV. If you are unable to get at least this version for OS/X perhaps a kind request to the fink XmlTV maintainer would help.
- NOTE: the tv_grab_* programs must be in your $PATH. One way you can place tv_grab_* in your $PATH is by changing the PATH setting in your ~/.bash_profile.
- For example, you can edit your ~/.bash_profile
(the tilde "~" character defines your home directory) to
contain a line something like this:
export PATH=$PATH:/Users/yourusername/xmltv
if "/Users/yourusername/xmltv" is where fink installed xmltv. - You will have to logout for this change to take effect.
- If you need help with Fink you find the Fink help website useful: http://fink.sourceforge.net/help/index.php?phpLang=en
3 Setup XMLTV
Simply run this Java Web Start application: XmlTVSetup.jnlp
4 Scheduling TV-Listings Updates
- Windows: The getListings.bat in your xmltvData directory needs to be run nightly. You can schedule this via Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools-> Scheduled Tasks.
-
Linux: The getListings shell script in your
xmltvData directory needs to be run nightly.
You can
schedule this via cron. For example: `cron -e` will
allow you to edit your crontab, and you can schedule
getListings to run at 5 AM via:
0 5 * * * /home/username/xmltvData/getListings

5.4 Proxy Authentication

6 Finished - Start ScheduleWorld To View TV-Listings
When you start ScheduleWorld you will see the "TV Providers" folder in your favorites.
7 Alternative Sources For XmlTV Data
http://pytvgrab.sourceforge.net/ is another source of XmlTV data that provides listings data for:
- be_tvb: Belgian/Dutch
- be_tlm: Belgian/French
- br_uol: Brazilian
- nz_xtra: New Zealand
- nz_nzoom: New Zealand (secondary)
8 Known Issues
- French, German, Swedish, Japanese listings all require XMLTV 0.5.30. No binaries are available for any platform that support all grabbers (yet). The Windows binary is currently missing the Japanese and Swedish grabbers.
- The French grabber does not work at the moment because it is missing the --config-file option for grabbing. (It is there for configuration)
- Several countries do not display the colours properly because the grabbers are missing the category information or I was unable to translate the category. Translations most welcome.
- UK Listings only: I don't pop up a dialog asking for proxy authentication information yet. If you need this just email and I'll make it a priority.
Please email support any questions or comments you may have.
